Marais District Photo Tour

Hôtel Sully and Square St. Gilles
Paris Marais District Photo Tour

Le Marais has so many highlights to see. One of the few sections of Paris where Medieval buildings can still be found in some abundance. The street patterns remain largely unscathed by Napolean III and his urban planner baron Haussman in the mid 19th Century who made important improvements to Paris but sacrificed whole medieval neighborhoods in their effort to modernize the city. Among the architectural highlights we’ll see: Hôtel de Sens, Hôtel Sully, Place des Voges, Hôtel Carnavalet as well as remnants of the 12th Century wall protecting Paris. In addition to some of these more celebrated structures, we’ll find the pleasant narrow and curving streets so distinctive of many Medieval cities along with numerous pocket-sized parks tucked in between the elegant buildings. Beginning in the 1960s the Marais has steadily developed into a fashion and cultural center of Paris with some of the trendiest independent fashion shops, art galleries, cafés and restaurants to be found in Paris.
