The St. Germain des Près neighborhood originally developed, beginnng in the 6th century around the St. Germain church which, as the name “prés” indicates, was built outside the Paris city walls in the fields. The church, itself is one of the oldest in Paris, with parts dating to more than 1000 years. The neighborhood has, in some ways, changed radically in the nearly 1400 years since the original church was built in the middle of the 6th century with trendy restaurants, cafés, clothing shops and elegant antique and art galleries. Other sites include the world famous Ecole des Beaux-Arts, still considered the most prestigeous art school in France, the St. Sulpice church, the Luxembourg Garden and the many beautiful narrow and pictureseque streets to be found close to the Seine river.
