Paris Photo Workshops

Paris Photo Workshops (voir page en français)

Place des Vosges and Bois de Vincennes

Discover our Paris photo workshops in digital and traditional photography! Michael McCarthy proposes photo workshops for all levels of photo experience. Digital photo classes include the fundamentals of camera operation while our traditional photo classes include new and old techniques (pinhole photo, cyanotype, gum bichromate, van dyke brown and others). Our classes are always small, ranging from private classes to groups of four people. Most workshops last from three to four hours giving each student time to develop a solid understanding of the different techniques presented in class.

Pinhole Photography Workshop

Paros Sténopé

The concept of Pinhole Photography was understood as long ago as Aristotle in Ancient Greece but it wasn’t until the Renaissance that the first pinhole cameras were put into practice. It took another three hundred years before these early cameras were able to be used to capture a permanent image. In this workshop we’ll be using these earliest discoveries to make our own photographs! And you’ll see that it isn’t complicated and the resulting images are remarkably beautiful–even with such primitive equipment! Michael will guide student through all the necessary steps for building their own cameras, offering suggestions about how to determine the necessary times to make our exposures to create our “negative” images and then different methods we can use to transform these into the “positives” which will resemble the scenes we photographed (although often in surprising and sometimes magical ways). This workshop is accessible to those with all levels of photographic experience. Students will leave with all the knowledge necessary to continue working on their own.

Cyanotype Photography Workshop

Cyanotype photo

Cyanotype is one of the oldest photo processes, invented in 1842. The cyanotype is one of the easiest of all the “alternative” photo processes of the 19th century and it has qualities that will please both the experienced photographer as much as the painter who finds photo to “technical.” Each image is unique and can have a very painterly feel or a more precise and detailed quality. In the course of three or four hours, students will learn all the basics necessary to continue working on their own at home without needing to make expensive investments in equipment or chemistry.

Price: 135 € per person (reduction if you come with a friend or if you sign up for both the pinhole and cyanotype workshops)
Upcoming Dates: Check out the workshop schedule
Payment Methods: Preferably by PayPal or by local French check if received at least one week before workshop.
